LITERACY VIGNETTE

I began to read at an early age.  I was privileged to be the first-born, as well as, the first grandchild in my family.  I had a variety of books and toys at my disposal.  My parents and grandparents were always very eager to interact with me.  And they devoted a great deal of time to me.
My mother was always very faithful to take me to our local library for reading programs.  We checked books out weekly and my mom set a good example by reading herself on a regular basis.  Unfortunately, I never truly learned to appreciate books because I always had access to them.  I grew up reading all of the great books, including my favorite childhood series, "The Nancy Drew Series".
There never was a great emphasis on reading when I was in school.  We did a lot of phonics and spelling and never any vocabulary words.  I would have truly benefited from a reading log.  Because of the lack of reading instruction, I began to loose interest in reading by the 6th grade.  The only book that I can recall reading in high school was "The Tale of Two Cities".  And I do not remember a great deal about this book.
As an adult, I have renewed by love for reading.  I read books every chance I get.  I spend a great deal of time reading to my children.  They love books and we enjoy shopping for new ones to add to our collection.  Reading allows us to explore new people and places.  We are also spending quality time together.
As a teacher, my students will be exposed to a variety of books.  They will be expected to engage in reading.  I will make it my responsibility to make reading exciting for them while educational.  My entire cirriculum will be literature based to expose students to the many, many pieces of wonderful literature.
